Known as a specifically sporty holiday day especially here in Australia, Sydney harbour also weighs in with the start of what is probably the one of the best known Yacht Race in the world. The Sydney to Hobart.
At one pm each Boxing Day, a line-up of somewhere between 60 and 100 vessels approach the start near the harbour ‘dogleg ‘at Bradleys Head. Often there are several ‘Supermaxis’ of around 100ft in length sometimes with celebrities aboard and always accompanied by a plethora of other yachts from the tiny sub 30-footers through sturdy ocean cruisers to serious offshore racers.
An amazing sight to behold given even more gravitas and colour if there is a Southerly blowing and skippers get to set their kites (spinnakers) for a downwind run out of the ‘heads’.
The racing fleet is one thing, then there is the spectator crowd – amazing what kind of craft seems to appear out of garages and boatsheds for this special day – a good chance to shake out cobwebs prior to the New Year’s celebrations.
SailCorp can get you amongst it all!
