Whales come out to play in Sydney

We are pretty lucky to boast more than 50% of the world’s whale, dolphin and porpoise species in Australian waters. So chances are that if you are out and about on Sydney Harbour you will catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures.

Most of the whales migrating past Sydney at the moment are Humpback whales but you could also spot other species such as Southern Rights, Minkes, Brydes, Blue and Orcas, as well as pods of dolphins and Australian Fur Seals.

The travelling pods tend to stay around 3 nautical miles (5.6km) off the coast but are known to venture into the harbour for a play, especially on the trip north. There are some great vantage points around our gorgeous harbour to spot whales at play. These include:

  • North Head Lookout, North Head National Park
  • Long Reef point
  • Bradley’s Head, Mosman
  • Cape Solander, Kurnell, Botany Bay National Park
  • Cape Banks, La Perouse
  • Bangally Headland at Avalon
  • Magic Point, Maroubra
  • Ben Buckler, Bondi
  • South Head Signal Station, South Head
  • Ku-ring-gai National Park
  • Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach
  • For those of you wanting to capture the perfect Kodak moment you might want to bring along some additional gear to your smartphone. Although its from way up in the northern hemisphere, we thought this piece had some pretty good tips on how to come home with that perfect shot .

Happy whale watching. We will be keeping our eyes out over the next 2 months and would be very happy to sail you to your perfect vantage point.
