About the Course

Get qualified to operate a marine VHF radio with confidence. The RSYS Marine Radio Course is a one-day course leading to the Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) — the nationally recognised qualification for using VHF marine radio in Australian waters. Ideal for recreational boaters, cruisers and racing crew operating on harbour, coastal and inshore waters, it combines theory with hands-on practice so you can make routine calls, use Digital Selective Calling (DSC), and handle a distress situation calmly and correctly.

Course Description

Marine VHF radio is one of the most important safety tools on board — your direct line to other vessels, marinas and rescue authorities when it matters most. This course gives you both the skills and the legal qualification to use it properly.

Over a single day at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, our RYA-qualified instructor covers the theory and the practical operation of marine VHF radio: how VHF channels are allocated and used, making routine and safety calls, correct distress, urgency and safety procedures (Mayday, Pan-Pan and Sécurité), Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and your MMSI, the phonetic alphabet, obtaining weather and navigation information, and your responsibilities under Australian radio licensing.

The course prepares you to sit the official Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) examination, administered by the Australian Maritime College’s Office of Maritime Communications on behalf of the ACMA. The SROCP is the qualification required to operate VHF marine radio equipment, and is recommended for every skipper and crew member who may need to use the radio.

Places are limited to 10 participants per course and the minimum age is 16.
