A Typical Passage
What Will I Learn
check
1. Passage Planning

In this section, you will develop knowledge of how fouling can influence boat speed and fuel consumption. You will also understand how to calculate fuel use at different speeds (including reserves), taking into account customs procedures and vessel stability. Building on these fundamentals, you will be able to plan a coastal passage by considering your vessel’s capability, navigation strategies, weather, victualling, potential ports of refuge, tidal heights and streams, and essential publications.

check
2. Preparation for Sea

You will understand which safety equipment is essential for offshore journeys and will be able to prepare your cruising vessel accordingly. This includes correct stowage, delivering a thorough safety briefing, setting watchkeeping schedules, delegating responsibilities, and completing essential equipment and engine checks before departure.

check
3. Pilotage

During pilotage training, you will be able to compile a detailed pilotage plan that factors in soundings, transits, clearing bearings, buoyage, local regulations, and tidal conditions. With these skills, you will be able to pilot a cruising vessel effectively in both daytime and nighttime situations.

4. Passage-making and Ability as Skipper

Here, you will understand the practical uses of electronic navigation aids such as AIS, radar, ENCs, and RNCs. You will then be able to take charge of a yacht—coordinating the crew, overseeing navigation, deck work, and domestic tasks—while remaining aware of meteorological trends and crew welfare. You will also be able to use electronic navigational equipment to plan and undertake passages, employing waypoints and routes.

5. Yacht Handling under Power

Focusing on wind and current influences, you will understand how these factors shape manoeuvres in confined spaces. You will be able to berth, unberth, and pick up a mooring bow- or stern-to without over-reliance on power. If you operate a twin-engined vessel, you will also be able to berth and unberth using a single engine and correct line-handling techniques.

6. Yacht Handling under Sail

When handling a yacht under sail, you will understand how wind and current affect manoeuvres and will be able to control the yacht in confined spaces solely by using sails. You will be able to pick up a mooring consistently and sail efficiently on all points of sail, including downwind conditions.

7. Adverse Weather Conditions

This area equips you to understand how to handle a cruising vessel in strong winds and proceed safely in restricted visibility. You will be able to prepare your yacht for heavy weather, making necessary adjustments for crew safety, and navigate effectively when visibility is limited.

check
8. Emergency Situations

In emergency scenarios, you will understand the procedures for abandoning to a life raft, helicopter or lifeboat rescues, and the aftercare for anyone who has been in the water. You will be able to explain cold-water shock to a crew member and recover a man overboard under power—or under sail if applicable—ensuring you’re ready to respond swiftly and effectively.

Next Steps

On completing the Coastal Skipper course, you are advised to broaden your experience by undertaking longer passages in varied conditions. If traveling to unfamiliar regions, research any unique factors such as katabatic winds, alternative buoyage systems, large tidal ranges, or particular berthing arrangements (e.g., Med moorings). For any specialized challenges, most PYA Training Centres offer tailored courses to further enhance your skills.

Course Description

The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Sailing Course is an advanced five-day liveaboard training program designed to develop the skills and confidence required to skipper a yacht on extended coastal and offshore passages, including at night. It is a natural progression for those who have completed the RYA Day Skipper course and are ready to handle more complex navigation, decision-making, and leadership responsibilities.

This course is focused on real-world skippering experience. Under the guidance of a qualified RYA instructor, you’ll plan and execute passages, manage a crew, and deal with a wide range of challenging situations, from busy ports to changing weather conditions. Emphasis is placed on developing sound judgement and practical skills that go beyond basic boat handling—preparing you to take command in unfamiliar waters and higher-pressure scenarios.

Navigation plays a key role throughout the course. You’ll refine your skills in advanced chartwork, tidal calculations, and pilotage. You’ll also use electronic navigation tools such as GPS, GNSS, and chartplotters to create and follow detailed passage plans. A significant part of the training is carried out at night, where you’ll be expected to maintain situational awareness, run effective watch systems, and navigate using lights, leading lines, and transits.

Sailing conditions and locations are chosen to provide a varied and realistic experience of coastal cruising. This includes skippering longer passages between ports, managing the yacht in confined areas, and sailing in tidal waters. Heavy weather techniques, reefing, anchoring, and emergency drills are incorporated to ensure you’re prepared for a wide range of offshore scenarios.

As the course is liveaboard, you’ll also gain practical experience in managing life on board—rotating through all crew positions, taking responsibility for safety briefings, meal planning, and yacht checks. Leadership and teamwork are integral components of the course, and you’ll be given the opportunity to take full command of the vessel for parts of the training, with constructive feedback from your instructor.

To enrol in this course, you should already have a solid understanding of navigation and meteorology to RYA Day Skipper theory level. You must also meet minimum experience requirements: 15 days at sea (including two as skipper), at least 300 nautical miles logged, and a minimum of eight night hours. These prerequisites ensure you’re ready to benefit from the advanced training the Coastal Skipper course offers.

On successful completion, you will receive the RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate, which demonstrates your capability to skipper a yacht on longer passages in coastal and offshore waters. It is also an important step towards preparing for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence exams.

This course is ideal for those looking to expand their sailing horizons, charter yachts in more demanding locations, or take the next step in their professional or personal sailing journey.
