About the Trip

The Hamilton Island to Sydney Offshore Training Passage is a rare opportunity to gain extensive offshore sailing experience along one of Australia’s most iconic and varied coastlines. Designed for those progressing toward their RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence, this 1,000+ nautical mile voyage combines tropical-to-temperate transitions, complex navigation challenges, and a mix of inshore pilotage and bluewater sailing.

Led by an experienced RYA instructor or offshore skipper, the course delivers a fully immersive, hands-on environment. Every participant rotates through all key onboard roles—helm, navigator, trimmer, watch leader—while developing core skills in passage planning, watchkeeping, weather routing, leadership, and safety management. Each leg exceeds 60NM and includes at least four overnight segments, allowing multiple RYA qualifying passages to be logged in a single trip.

About the Course

This RYA-focused mile builder is designed for sailors looking to log meaningful offshore sea miles toward their RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore qualifications. Covering approximately 1,000 nautical miles along Australia’s stunning east coast, this passage offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in extended coastal cruising under the supervision of an RYA-qualified skipper.

Unlike a formal course, this is a practical, hands-on journey where you will take an active role in running the vessel. You’ll be involved in watchkeeping, helming, sail changes, navigation, passage planning, night sailing, logbook keeping, and safety management. The trip is structured to meet RYA requirements for qualifying passages and sea time, with detailed records and verification provided upon completion.

Whether you’re preparing for an RYA assessment or simply want to build skills and confidence in offshore conditions, this passage provides the depth of experience necessary to progress to the next stage in your sailing journey.

A Typical Passage

Your journey begins at Hamilton Island Marina, set in the heart of the Whitsundays. Following safety briefings, provisioning, and yacht orientation, the crew navigates through reef-lined channels and tidal waters—ideal for practising real-world pilotage under instructor supervision.

Once clear of the islands, the vessel shifts to a 24-hour offshore routine, with watch rotations typically in 3–4 hour shifts. Duties include helming, navigation support, lookout, trimming, galley work, and system checks. The first long leg often heads for Mackay or Rosslyn Bay, giving the crew time to adapt to life at sea.

From there, the passage continues south via 150–220NM legs, with stopovers in ports such as Bundaberg, Mooloolaba, or Fraser Island anchorages (weather permitting). You’ll gain experience in open-ocean conditions, bar entrances, and downwind sailing—often in southeast trade winds with following seas.

Longer legs incorporate radar and AIS navigation, night helming by compass, identifying vessel lights, and managing fatigue. These night watches are crucial confidence-building exercises. As you head south, conditions transition from warm trade winds to the cooler, changeable systems of New South Wales, adding variety to the sailing challenges.

A highlight is the longer run to Coffs Harbour, testing endurance and navigation precision. The final approach to Sydney typically involves a night sail, timing entry at Sydney Heads for morning light and tide—a fittingly dramatic conclusion to the voyage.

At each port, structured layovers include debriefs, passage reviews, and preparation for the next leg. Trainees progressively take on leadership responsibilities, building toward Yachtmaster Offshore expectations.
