Course Description

The Marine Radio Licence Sydney course is a nationally recognised training program that teaches you how to correctly operate a VHF marine radio. This licence—known as the SROCP (Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency)—is issued by the Australian Maritime College (AMC) and is mandatory for anyone who wishes to legally operate a VHF radio in Australian waters.

Whether you’re boating recreationally or preparing for commercial marine qualifications, this one-day course provides the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to use marine communication equipment safely and effectively. It’s ideal for sailors, powerboaters, PWC operators, and crew members working in the tourism or transport industry.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to send and receive routine messages, communicate with other vessels, access weather forecasts, and handle emergency situations such as man overboard or distress calls. You’ll also be introduced to important communication protocols and procedures such as Digital Selective Calling (DSC), channel allocations, and phonetic alphabet use.

Our Marine Radio Licence Sydney course includes classroom-based instruction followed by a multiple-choice exam, which is assessed by an AMC-accredited invigilator. Upon passing, you will be issued with a nationally recognised marine radio certificate valid for life.

To enrol, you must be at least 16 years old and able to read, write, and understand English. No prior experience is required, making this course perfect for both beginners and experienced boaters looking to formalise their qualifications.

Completing this course is often a prerequisite for other maritime certifications such as Coxswain Grade 3, Coxswain Grade 1, and commercial boating licences. It also enhances safety for recreational boaters by ensuring you know how to call for help, report incidents, and stay informed about changing conditions on the water.

Delivered by experienced marine trainers in the heart of Sydney, our course combines expert instruction, real-world application, and a streamlined assessment process. Secure your marine radio licence in Sydney today and ensure you’re legally equipped for safe, clear communication on the water.
