Our Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) course, delivered exclusively for Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron members, provides comprehensive training in the safe and effective use of VHF and MF/HF marine radios. This nationally recognised qualification is essential for offshore racing, coastal cruising, and any vessel operating beyond simple line-of-sight communication.
Held on-site at the Squadron for maximum convenience, the course covers all key operational requirements, including distress, urgency and safety communications; DSC functions; radio protocols; correct call formats; EPIRB and emergency equipment integration; and best-practice communication habits for both inshore and offshore sailing. Members will gain a solid understanding of radio theory, practical operation, and the legal obligations associated with marine radio use.
The session concludes with the official AMSA-recognised examination, allowing RSYS members to complete both the training and certification process in one streamlined experience. This dedicated course supports safer boating, clearer communication, and full compliance with offshore racing regulations, all within the familiar environment of the Squadron.

The Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) is a nationally recognised qualification required for anyone operating marine radios beyond simple, local communication. For RSYS members, our dedicated MROCP training program provides an in-depth, practical, and highly relevant learning experience designed specifically around the needs of sailors, cruisers, and offshore racers within the Squadron community.
Delivered on-site at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, this course offers members the convenience of completing both the training and the official examination in a familiar and professional environment. Our instructors are experienced maritime trainers who bring real-world knowledge from commercial operations, offshore sailing, and emergency communication scenarios. Their focus is on ensuring every participant not only meets the standard but develops a confident understanding of how and when to use marine radio systems effectively.
Throughout the course, members will learn the correct operation of VHF and MF/HF radios, including Digital Selective Calling (DSC) functions. The training covers essential topics such as distress, urgency, and safety procedures; Mayday and Pan-Pan calls; ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication protocols; radio propagation; equipment setup; and understanding the Australian marine radio network. The course also explores the integration of radio use with emergency beacons (EPIRBs), Search and Rescue procedures, and key safety systems used in offshore and coastal racing.
Practical components give members hands-on experience with radio equipment, enabling them to practise correct call formats, conduct simulated emergencies, and understand how to communicate clearly in stressful or time-sensitive situations. This ensures sailors are not only compliant with offshore racing requirements but are also well-prepared to respond confidently and correctly in real-life emergencies.
At the end of the training session, participants sit the official MROCP examination, administered on-site for maximum convenience. Successful completion provides the certification required for many offshore sailing events, including blue-water races, and forms an essential part of responsible seamanship.
This course supports RSYS’s commitment to promoting safety, professionalism, and strong communication skills among its members. Whether you race offshore, skipper coastal passages, or simply want to deepen your knowledge, the MROCP course is an invaluable addition to your sailing skillset.
