About the Trip

This multi-day RYA mile-building voyage sails from Sydney to Eden and back, covering over 470 nautical miles along one of Australia’s most scenic and challenging coastal routes.

Structured around six offshore legs—each over 60NM—it offers multiple opportunities for overnight sailing, continuous watchkeeping, and real-world coastal navigation. You’ll visit Jervis Bay, Bermagui, and Eden, with layovers for rest, debriefing, and role rotation.

Led by a qualified RYA instructor, this trip is designed for sailors preparing for RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or those wanting to strengthen offshore skills through structured passage-making. Accommodation is onboard in shared berths, with hot-bunking
during active legs.

About the Course

This introductory course is tailored for those new to sail cruising. Over two days or broken up into smaller sessions, participants will learn the basics of steering a yacht, handling sails, working with ropes, and maintaining onboard safety.

The RYA Start Yachting certificate can be used to count towards an RYA Competent Crew certificate.
The student need only finish three more days or two weekends of the Competent Crew course to be issued the RYA Competent Crew Certificate.

A Typical Passage

The Sydney to Eden return trip is designed for sailors seeking to build qualifying miles and gain practical offshore experience. Covering more than 470NM, it comprises six distinct offshore legs—three southbound, three northbound—each exceeding 60NM to meet RYA Yachtmaster Offshore criteria.

Southbound

Leg 1: Sydney to Jervis Bay (~90NM)

5–20 hours, passing Wollongong, Port Kembla, and Kiama before entering Jervis Bay via Point Perpendicular. A sheltered anchorage or mooring offers a rest period and pilotage practice.

Leg 2: Jervis Bay to Bermagui (~75NM)

12–16 hours along a more rugged, exposed coastline, passing Ulladulla and Batemans Bay. Arrival is into a working fishing port with berths at Bermagui Fishermen’s Co-op.

Leg 3: Bermagui to Eden (~70NM)

10–14 hours, with remote offshore sailing past Tathra before entering Twofold Bay and docking at Snug Cove Marina.

Northbound

The return journey retraces Eden → Bermagui → Jervis Bay → Sydney, offering the chance to sail familiar waters in new conditions, reinforcing navigational skills and decision-making.
Throughout the trip, crew rotate through helm, navigator, watch leader, and deck roles, handling night sailing, offshore navigation, and structured watchkeeping. This format maximises hands-on experience while providing rest and review time between passages.

Course Description

Please note: All RYA mile-building trips are weather-dependent. Routes, departure times, and destinations may be adjusted to ensure safe completion of each passage.

The Sydney to Eden Return Mile Builder is a professionally structured training voyage for sailors aiming for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence. Over six to seven days, you’ll sail more than 470NM, complete six offshore legs over 60NM, and log multiple overnight passages in varied coastal conditions.

Stops at Jervis Bay, Bermagui, and Eden are chosen to meet RYA passage requirements and to challenge your pilotage and navigational abilities. Under the guidance of an RYA-qualified instructor, you’ll rotate through helm, watch leader, navigator, and deck roles,
building skills in:

  • Passage planning and execution
  • Night sailing and offshore navigation
  • Radar and AIS use
  • VHF communication
  • Fatigue management
  • Commercial port entry and exit

The trip offers real-world offshore experience—shifting weather systems, tidal influences, and limited shelter—mirroring the demands of extended coastal cruising. Accommodation is onboard with shared berths and hot-bunking during passages, and shore facilities are available at marina stopovers.

By the end of this trip, you will have completed several RYA-qualifying passages, strengthened your leadership and seamanship skills, and gained the confidence to manage extended offshore voyages.

Spaces are limited to ensure individual coaching and meaningful participation. This is one of Australia’s most comprehensive and rewarding RYA mile-building opportunities.
