The Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht Race is one of Australia’s premier offshore sailing events, offering a unique opportunity to combine genuine race experience with structured offshore training. Spanning approximately 400 nautical miles, this race from Sydney Harbour to Southport in Queensland provides an excellent platform for building qualifying passages toward the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.
As a member of the crew aboard a professionally prepared offshore racing yacht, you’ll rotate through key roles such as helming, trimming, navigation, and lookout. You’ll be fully immersed in a high-performance environment while gaining valuable miles, night hours, offshore seamanship skills, and exposure to the demands of real-world ocean racing.
This introductory course is tailored for those new to sail cruising. Over two days or broken up into smaller sessions, participants will learn the basics of steering a yacht, handling sails, working with ropes, and maintaining onboard safety.
The RYA Start Yachting certificate can be used to count towards an RYA Competent Crew certificate.
The student need only finish three more days or two weekends of the Competent Crew course to be issued the RYA Competent Crew Certificate.
The race begins against the stunning backdrop of Sydney Harbour, with a tactical start between North and South Head. Once clear of the Heads, the fleet heads north into the Tasman Sea, settling into offshore race mode as the New South Wales coastline slides away to port.
The course runs past major coastal landmarks—Newcastle, Port Stephens, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay—before entering the Gold Coast Seaway to finish at Southport. While the official course is about 384NM, tactical decisions and wind shifts can lengthen or shorten the actual miles sailed.
A 24-hour watch system is adopted immediately, with crews rotating every 3–4 hours through roles such as helm, trimmer, bow, and navigator’s assistant. Off-watch, crew rest in shared bunks, manage galley duties, and support logkeeping and system checks.
Conditions can range from light airs demanding precise trim, to fresh offshore breezes where reefing, balance, and endurance are critical. Sea states vary with coastal convergence effects, wind-against-current zones, and interactions with the East Australian Current. This variety makes the race a valuable real-world training ground.
Navigation is both visual and electronic, with participants using paper charts, GPS, AIS, and radar to manage the vessel’s course. Night sailing adds another layer of challenge—sail changes by headlamp, light identification, lookout for shipping and unlit hazards, and coordination in darkness.
The race is non-stop—there are no planned port entries—so pre-start weather routing is essential, and tactical adjustments happen in real time. Depending on performance and weather, most crews finish in 2–4 days, with 2–3 nights at sea. The finish is followed by berthing at Southport Yacht Club or nearby marinas for a full debrief and celebration.
For those building toward RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, the race provides an RYA-qualifying passage, night hours, offshore navigation, and crew leadership opportunities in a high-pressure but supportive environment.

You’ll rotate through helm, trimmer, navigator’s assistant, deck crew, and lookout positions, all under the guidance of an experienced offshore skipper or RYA instructor. From heavy-weather sail changes at night to radar-assisted collision avoidance, the skills you develop are directly applicable to both racing and offshore cruising.
Safety is a priority—before the start, you’ll complete a full safety briefing covering lifejackets, tethers, AIS beacons, EPIRBs, MOB recovery, and race-specific safety protocols. The watch system ensures that every participant contributes to the vessel’s performance while also learning in a real-world, high-pressure environment.
Accommodation is onboard in shared berths with hot-bunking during active legs. Meals are provided onboard, with crew members rotating through galley duties. On completion, the yacht berths at Southport Yacht Club or a nearby marina for a final debrief, equipment checks, and celebration.
